THE MODULATION OF MUCOSAL IMMUNE MARKERS, URS, ANDPSYCHOLOGICAL PARAMETERS FOLLOWING ACUTE AND CHRONICEXERCISEbyCAROLE ANN SLOANAugust 2014Advisor: Dr. Hermann-J. EngelsMajor: Exercise and Sport ScienceDegree: Doctor of PhilosophyThe purpose of this dissertation was to evaluate changes in two antimicrobial markers, upper respiratory symptom (URS) variables, and mood state following participation in an acute(N = 93) and chronic (N = 88) observational study of college aerobic exercise, yoga exercise, and non-exercise classes. METHODS: Unstimulated whole saliva was collected pre/post-acute (50 minutes) andpre/midpoint/post-chronic (12 weeks) during the study period. Saliva was analyzed for salivaryimmunoglobulin A (SIgA) and salivary alpha amylase (SAA) using protocols and assay kits bySalimetrics, upper respiratory symptoms (URS) were evaluated using the Wisconsin UpperRespiratory Symptom Survey (WURSS), and mood states were evaluated by the Profile of MoodStates (POMS) questionnaire. RESULTS: Analysis of the acute data revealed significant improvements for SIgAconcentration in the aerobic exercise group (AEG) and the yoga exercise group (YEG) as well asSIgA secretion increases for all participants combined. No significant acute SAA concentrationor secretion improvements were noted.

Effect of Concurrent Training on inflammatory markers of Beta Thalassemia Major Patients
Introduction: Chronic vascular inflammatory state plays an important role in the pathophysiology of thalassemia. Cross-sectional studies suggest that exercise has anti-inflammatory effects, leading to lower levels of several proatherogenic inflammatory markers. However, this has yet to be confirmed by randomized prospective trials. The present pilot study examined the effect of Concurrent) Trai...

Background: Regarding the physiological and immunological changes of the human body following acute exhaustive activity and the evidence in traditional medicine of the effects of barberry on the strengthening of the immune system, the aim of this study was evaluation of the effect short-term barberry juice supplementation on the response of immunoglobulin A, G, M and cortisol in active girls fo...
متن کاملAllogeneic Red Blood Cell Transfusion Following the Total Hip Arthroplasty Triggers the Immunomodulatory Responses
Background and Aims: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a common orthopedic surgery. The main focus in the research of THA is immune responses in these patients following the blood transfusion. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the immune modulation indexes such as T cell amplification, Tcell surface markers and also production of cytokines in the patients undergoing THA surgery following bloo...

Background & Aim: Acute exhaustive activities result in the physiological and immunological changes of the human body. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of short-term consumption of Aloe Vera extract on immunoglobulin M, G, A responses and cortisol concentrations in active girls following exhaustive CrossFit exercise. Methods: In this study, 30 healthy young girls (age 23.03 ± 2...
متن کاملAcute Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura in Infants
Abstract Objective Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) manifests as an easy bruising or extravasation of blood from capillaries into skin and mucous membranes. The characteristics of acute ITP in infants have rarely been described. In order to better understand acute ITP in infants, the characteristics of the disease at this age group was investigated. Material and Methods The present des...
